Un’artista vicinissimo alla nostra idea di musica elettronica, fermo sulle radici geografiche che amiamo alla follia, città come Detroit, Chicago e Den Haag, che hanno segnato l’esistenza di Niels Luinenburg, in arte Delta Funktionen.
Una serie di produzioni sempre validissime a cavallo tra techno ed electro per la Ann Aimee Records, costola di quella Delsin che abbiamo imparato a venerare da tempo. Un dj set che mette mano al vinile, proprio come piace a noi, con una selezione che scava nel profondo per regalarci un lungo momento da dedicare all’ascolto.

Per iniziare puoi dirci in che modo ti sei avvicinato alla produzione musicale ed all’arte del djing?
All’età di 15 anni ho iniziato a comporre beats e loop con Reason. Niente di serio ripensandoci, ma era pur sempre qualcosa che serviva a passar tempo. Più tardi ho incontrato Damian Keane e Dave Miller della Audiosculpture records, loro sono stati i miei veri mentori e mi hanno insegnato molto della produzione musicale. Le cose che mi hanno influenzato maggiormente agli inizi venivano dall’Inghilterra ed erano di gente come Surgeon, Regis, Steve Bicknell James Ruskin e Luke Slater.
Intorno al 2004 ho iniziato anche a suonare come dj nel pub gestito da Damian ed utilizzavo Ableton, ma non appena ho avuto fuori la mia prima produzione ho deciso di passare al vinile. Ho anche lavorato in un grande negozio di dischi nella mia città natale, Leeuwarden, il posto si chiama Deeptrax Records, lì c’era molta vecchia roba di Detroit e Chicago e devo dire che questo ha catturato la mia attenzione in maniera definitiva.
E’ stata un’opportunità veramente singolare, perché Leeuwarden è un posto molto isolato nei Paesi Bassi e quindi lontano da ogni movimento, basti pensare che per sentire qualche buon artista ho sempre dovuto fare lunghi viaggi fino ad Amsterdam od altre città. Poi devo dire che lavorando in questo negozio riuscivo a spendere tutto quello che guadagnavo proprio su quei dischi che avevo in negozio! Penso questo si possa sentire nel nostro dj set. Ad oggi la mia ricerca è ancora attivissima per trovare perle da suonare nei dancefloor.
Come definiresti/descriveresti la musica che ami proporre?
Mi piace parlare del mio stile come di un “gioco serio”, è fatto fondamentalmente di roba che viene da Detroit, Chicago e da Den Haag. Si tratta di musica onesta ed originale che si tratti di techno, electro o house sia vecchia che nuova. La sfida è sempre quella di riuscire a combinare insieme tutte queste influenze cercando di creare un unico flusso.
Preferisco sempre cercar di prendermi dei rischi piuttosto che realizzare una miscela semplice e priva di creatività. Per quanto riguarda le mie produzioni, credo rispettino ciò che suono in dj set, faccio soltanto quello che mi piace senza badare troppo ai generi.
A volte può essere più techno, altre electro, quello che cerco di fare ogni volta è metterci le palle!
Potresti descriverci il tuo setup in studio? Con cosa produci musica attualmente?
E’ un insieme di Hardware e Software, Uso alcune batterie elettroniche della Roland, sintetizzatori Yamaha ed effetti come l’Alesis Mindverb ed il Boss Space Echo. Utilizzo Ableton come sequencer ed alcuni VST per altri effetti.
Dove hai registrato il podcast? E cosa puoi dirci in merito?
Ho registrato questo mix nel mio home-studio a Berlino con due piatti ed un mixer. Questo contiene un bel po’ di tracce che ho suonato durante l’anno. Fondamentalmente è un’idea di come avrei affrontato la notte ma compressa in 76 minuti.
Su cosa stai lavorando al momento?
Stiamo (Io, Marcel Delsin e Marteen) finendo di lavorare alla compilation Inertia su Ann Aimee. I primi due Ep sono già usciti mentre il tre ed il quattro arriveranno a breve. Il cd-mix uscirà invece per Gennaio. Poi sto’ lavorando ad altri remix ed altre tracce di cui ancora non posso dirti molto.

To start out, can you tell us how you got into djing and producing electronic music?
When I was around 15 years old, I started making beats and loops with Reason. Nothing serious back than, but more something to fill my time with. Later on I met Damian Keane & Dave Miller from the Audiosculpture
label. They were my mentors and teached me a lot about music production. First I was pretty much into the stuff that came from the UK, from guys like Surgeon, Regis, James Ruskin, Steve Bicknell, Luke Slater and all the Birmingham influenced stuff. Around 2004 I started DJ’ing (and wasting my study) in the pub Damian worked at.
First I played with Ableton, but as soon as I got my first vinyl-release, I switched to vinyl. Later on I started working at Deeptrax Records, a great recordshop in my former hometown Leeuwarden. We sold mainly old Detroit and Chicago stuff and that caught my interest even more. It was quite unique to have access to all this stuff, because Leeuwarden is in a pretty desolate part of The Netherlands.
There were no parties with artists I’d like to see, so I always had to travel to Amsterdam or other cities across The Netherlands. But by working in this recordshop, I discovered all this great music from Detroit and Chicago and basically spent all my earned money directly on the records I loved. And I think you can still hear in my DJ-sets that I’ve got a wide ranging taste in electronic dance music. Till today, the search is still going on to find the great dancefloor weapons.
How do you define/describe the music you make and play?
I’d like to describe my DJ-style as ‘serious fun’. The basic foundation (now) is the stuff that comes from, or draws inspiration of, cities like Detroit, Berlin, Chicago & The Hague.
If it’s honest and original music, I’ll play it, whether it’s techno, house, electro, disco, new or old. For me it’s a challenge to combine all these different influences and make it work, without being chaotic. I prefer to take a lot of risks instead of choosing the easy way.
Regarding my productions, I don’t really like to pin myself down on some kind of specific sub-genre. In a way it’s like my DJ-sets. I just do what I like and feel and try not to care too much about genres. Sometimes it’s more driving techno, other times it has more house or electro flavours. Maybe the general thing about my productions is that I like to put some balls into it.
Could you describe your current studio setup? What are you making music with?
It’s a combination of hardware and software. I use some Roland drumcomputers, some Yamaha FM synths, an Alesis Midiverb and a Boss Space Echo and I use some on board FX from my mixer. I use Ableton as sequencer and some VST’s for the FX.
Where did you record this podcast and what can you tell us about it?
I recorded this mix at my home studio in Berlin, using two decks and a mixer. The mix contains a lot of tracks that I played out during this year. It’s basically the idea of how I’d headline a night, but compressed to 76 minutes.
What are you working on at the moment?
We (Marsel Delsin, Maarten the intern and I) just finished the Inertia compilation on Ann Aimee. The first two EP’s are out now and number three and four will follow soon. The mix cd I did for this project will be released around January. Now I’m working on some remixes and some other stuff I can’t say too much about right now.
