Dopo avervi presentato la città di New York con lo splendido podcast di Dennis Citizen Kane, ci spostiamo poco più a nord regalandovi il suono di Chicago!
A mixare in esclusiva il cuore della Wind City arriva un’autentica leggenda: Merwyn Sanders, una delle due menti che nel lontano ’89 fondarono il progetto VIRGO, lasciando alla storia l’omonimo capolavoro pubblicato dalla Radical Records. Oggi Merwyn corre da solo, portando avanti il verbo dell’House Music, spingendolo verso il futuro. Ritengo che la maggior parte dei fondatori della House music siano tolleranti rispetto a quanto accaduto. Attualmente ci sono svariati generi differenti in ambito musicale ed addirittura la chiamano EDM.
Penso che per la maggior parte dei Chicagoani è semplicemente House Music ed ognuno di loro vuole tornare al concetto iniziale di musica, al suo spirito ed alla sua anima radicata nella nostra città.
Questo è il motivo per cui il passato è così importante. Ora chiunque e pure sua nonna può procurarsi un software per fare musica; ci troviamo attualmente nel mondo del download digitale ma c’è ancora tanto da imparare dal passato.Ricordo ancora tempi in cui andavo da IMPORT RECORDS e non avevo soldi a sufficienza per prendere tutto quello che desideravo. Son giusto stato due settimane fa da Gramophone Records e mi saranno piaciuti forse un paio di brani, non di più.

Con questo non voglio dire che non c’è niente di buono in giro attualmente, ma solo che non è più come una volta, ma sono convinto che torneremo a quei fasti e che torneremo a sentire grandi cose nell’ House Music. E’ incredibile come la House Music abbia ottenuto riconoscimenti come i Grammy, sia riconosciuta in tutto il mondo, abbia strade intitolate e persone che hanno ottenuto grande successo e credo che tutto questo non potrà che aumentare partendo da…Chicago.Di recente ho chiesto ad alcune figure leggendarie dell’house alcune considerazioni circa la tua richiesta.

Maurice Joshua , produttore vincitore di Grammy, stimato remixer, ha dichiarato: dobbiamo passare il testimone alle nuove generazioni, in particolar modo il genere Soulful House perchè altrimenti se viene minato dalla EDM, di quest’esperienza musicale rimarrà solo la testimonianza su video e nei film, ecc. Un pioniere della house music come Chip E. si è così espresso: la produzione musicale viene suddivisa in varie fasi, comincia allo stato grezzo, così com’era negli anni ‘80 e siamo poi noi a costruirla ed affinarla anche se ad un certo punto specialmente con l’introduzione delle nuove tecnologie rischiamo di costruirci attorno troppe cose e poi dobbiamo correre ai ripari e ridurre la produzione ad un livello più basso per poi ripartire a farla ricrescere.
Un altro pioniere della musica come Adonis ha aggiunto che il movimento House si basa sul concetto che la musica viene sempre prima di tutto.

Per chiudere il discorso il presidente dello Slang Music Group nonché pioniere della musica house Vince Lawrence ha dichiarato: noi come comunità, ed in particolar modo i ragazzi della Soulful House, dobbiamo produrre dischi fantastici, dobbiamo crescere, non possiamo restare legati ad un passato fatto di due suoni del synth sperando che tutto questo faccia ballare le piste.
L’opportunità di raggiungere la grandezza ed il riconoscimento spetta a noi, dobbiamo creare la musica migliore, utilizzare i migliori tools e collaborare con chiunque ci possa permettere di raggiungere il massimo facendo tutto questo per voi.

The podcast 200 series goes on, last week we’ve presented you New York and today we move to the north, offering you a new chapter describing the Sound of Chicago!
From the heart of the windy city we’re honoured to have with us a true living legend: Merwyn Sanders, one half of the musical project started in ’89, VIRGO, producing the self titled masterpiece released on Radical Records.Today Merwyn is running on his own, keeping the House Music spirit alive and pushing it forward.
For this special occasion he’s mixing his beloved city tracing the exploits, making us relive the past, explore the present and imagine a peaceful and bright tomorrow.

Merwyn Sanders Statement

The current movement of House music in Chicago seems to be getting back to the roots of it, along with a lot of new House music artists trying to carry the torch.
I think most founding people of House music are being tolerant to what has been happening. There are 20+ different genres of the music and is now even being called EDM.I think to most Chicagoans, it’s simply “House Music”.
I think everyone wants to get back to the music of it, the spirit of it, the soul of it, in our city. This is why the past is so important.
Everyone and his grandmother can get some music software and make something. We are in a world of digital download right now but there’s a lot to learn from the past.I remember going to Import Records back in the day and not having enough money to buy all I wanted. I went to Gramaphone Records a week ago and I only liked two new tracks. That’s not to say there’s nothing good out there right now, just that it’s not like it was. But I think it will be. Soon, even greater things will happen with House music. It’s amazing that House music has reached the Grammy’s, gone around the world, have streets named after it and many people are hugely successful by it, and I think it will even get bigger, from the root … Chicago.I recently asked a few legendary House music producers for their take on your question.
Grammy award winning producer, remixer, and DJ, Maurice Joshua stated that, “We need to past the torch to the younger generation, especially the soulful House genre because if that gets fazed out by EDM, the soulful House experience will only be relived by what we have captured on video, film, etc.”
House music pioneer, Chip E. shared that, “Music production goes in phases. It starts off raw, as it did in the ’80s, and then we build and enhance it. But at some point, especially with all the new technology, we build too much, and then have to strip it down. Back to basics and then grow again.”
House music pioneer, Adonis adds, “The Chicago House movement was and is about the muzic’ first!“
Lastly, House music pioneer and president of Slang Music Group, Vince Lawrence voiced, “We as a community, especially the soulful guys, have to make great amazing records. We have to grow.
We can’t live in the past with two synth sounds hoping that it’s going to rock arenas. The opportunity to achieve true greatness and to bring our legacy full circle is upon us. Make the best records.
