Il talento di Basic Soul Unit è emerso pian piano grazie ad una serie di grooves house che possiedono una personalità unica di questi tempi. Un Artista con un serio background ed una coscienza radicata che gli hanno permesso di produrre musica che fondamentalmente ha sempre suonato come nuova. Non che non abbia riferimenti, sia ben chiaro, ma quantomeno non ostentati come la moda odierna sembra insegnare.

Per Electronique.it in un mix duro che affronta tutte le tematiche espresse regolarmente in dj set dall’uomo. Un viaggio nella dance muscolare tra techno, acid ed house. Buon ascolto!

Per iniziare puoi dirci in che modo ti sei avvicinato alla produzione musicale ed all’arte del djing?

Ho iniziato ad ascoltare la dance music grazie ad una college-radio di Toronto, quando avevo circa 11 anni, è stato alla fine degli anni ’80. Ricordo che il programma che ascoltavo di più era Dave’s Dance Music. Lo show suonava un mix di House, Hip Hop, RnB, Freestyle Latin, Reggae & Soca. Probabilmente è stata anche la prima volta che ho sentito la musica mixata. Ho iniziato ad andare da Starsounds Records ad acquistare alcuni dei dischi ascoltati nel radio show. Poi il ragazzo di mia sorella maggiore, a quei tempi mi ha prestato il suo mixer e giradischi e mi ha insegnato le basi del beat matching, facendomi appassionare fin da subito a questo nuovo mondo.

Per quanto riguarda la produzione, sono sempre stato curioso e smanioso di provarci ritenendomi una persona creativa (ho studiato design e lavoro come graphic designer) ma non ho mai veramente avuto i soldi e le conoscenze per acquistare le macchine necessarie per la produzione poiché ho sempre speso tutto per i dischi. Solo grazie all’evoluzione della produzione in digitale sui computer, ho potuto iniziare ad eplorare questo mondo. La mia prima release uscì su un’etichetta Toronto locale chiamata Iwanai. È stato nel 2003.

Come definiresti/descriveresti la musica che ami proporre?

Suono un ampio spettro di musica. Alla base di tutto credo ci sia un senso di soul e groove ad unire. Ma non mi riferisco solo al concetto di “Soul” music, ma anche ad un sentimento più profondo. Potrebbe essere techno martellante, deep house, disco, oppure un brano soul o jazz anni 70 (faccio ancora una serata jazz / funk oriented a Toronto chiamata Footprints che è gia al suo 11° anno), non importa. La buona musica è buona musica.
Le mie produzioni sono per lo più classificate come house o techno, ma mi auguro catturino questo spirito pieno di soul e con cuna spruzzata di funk troppo ovviamente.

Potresti descriverci il tuo setup in studio? Con cosa produci musica attualmente?

Uso Reason e/o Live assiema ad una 707, Roland Alpha Juno 2, Korg Poly 800, x0xb0x. Ho un Launchpad e coi controllers Livid Code. Niente di raro od eccessivamente costoso.
Dove hai registrato il podcast? E cosa puoi dirci in merito?
Il mix è stato registrato nella mia cantina. In generale, con i mix è difficile concentrare tutto l’ampio spettro musicale in base alla situazione, ma io continuo a cercare di dargli un senso di progressione e costruzione.

Su cosa stai lavorando al momento?

Ho appena creato una nuova etichetta chiamata Lab.our con un vecchio amico Jason Ulrich. La prima release spero esca nelle prossime settimane.
Oltre alla mia release ne abbiamo un altro paio di un giovane produttore di Toronto di nome Maxwell Church.
Speriamo di poter proporre nuovi talenti locali e contribuire così a creare, sviluppare e far conoscere meglio la comunità musicale di Toronto!

Chi o cosa è la tua maggiore ispirazione?

Ritengo che qualsiasi cosa nella vita rappresenti per me una fonte d’ispirazione: mia moglie e mia figlia, gli amici, i coetanei musicali, viaggiare e incontrare persone in tutto il mondo. Visitando club e feste e sentire l’atmosfera in città diverse.

To start out, can you tell us how you got into djing and producing electronic music?

I first heard dance music on college radio in Toronto when I was about 11 yrs old, it was the late 80’s. The main show I listened to was Dave’s Dance Music. The show had a mix of House, Hip Hop, RnB, Latin Freestyle, Reggae & Soca. It was probably also the first time I heard music mixed. I started going to Starsounds Records and buying some of the music I heard on the show. Then my older sister’s boyfriend at the time lent me his mixer and turntables and taught me the basics of beat matching. From that point I was pretty much hooked.

As for producing, I was always curious and wanted to try it being a creative person (studying design and working as a graphic designer) but never really had the money and knowledge to get gear as I was heavy into buying records. It was only the advance of digital production on personal computers that allowed me to start exploring. My first release came out on a local Toronto label called Iwanai. That was 2003.

How do you define/describe the music you make and play?

I play a pretty wide spectrum of music. The thing that connects it all is probably a sense of soul and groove. Not just in the sense of “Soul” music but a deep feeling. It could be banging techno, deep house, disco, or a 70’s soul or jazz tune (I still do a jazz/funk oriented night in Toronto called Footprints that’s in its 11th year), it doesn’t matter. Good music is good music.
My productions is mostly categorized as house or techno but hopefully captures this sense of soulful spirit (and some funk too of course).

Could you describe your current studio setup? What are you making music with?

I work out of my home. I use Reason and/or Live along with a 707, Roland Alpha Juno 2, Korg Poly 800, X0XB0X. I have a Launchpad & a Livid Code as controllers. Nothing rare or crazy expensive.

Where did you record this podcast and what can you tell us about it?

The mix was recorded in my basement. In general with mixes, it’s hard to convey the spectrum of music I can play depending on the situation. But I still try to have a sense of progression and build.

What are you working on at the moment?

I’ve just started a new label called Lab.our with an old friend Jason Ulrich. The first release is out hopefully in the next weeks. We’ve been working on and collecting music for this and besides myself, we also have a couple releases from a great young producer in Toronto named Maxwell Church. Hopefully we can showcase more local talent and help build the Toronto music community!

Who/what is your biggest inspiration?

I feel like everything in life is an inspiration at the moment. My wife and daughter, friends, musical peers, traveling and meeting people in the world. Visiting clubs and parties and feeling the vibe in different cities.
