Buon ascolto!
Attualmente,
E cosa puoi dirci in merito?
Potrei però fare dei nomi come Hight tone, Miles Davis, Indian classical music, Frank Zappa, Maurice Ravel, Soft Machine, King Tubby, Smashing Pumpkins, Death (the band), John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Magma…

M: Well, it’s not that easy since we all three have pretty different backgrounds. I think the first time I tweaked a knob was when I was 22 or some. By the time I was more using the computer as a way to hear what I was writing for different bands, mostly Jazz and funk stuff. Then I made my way from there.
G: When I was 16 I got interested in making my own electronic music using Reason 3.0. I was mostly making Hip-Hop and Techno at this time. Later after joining a band I then started to be very interested in making Dub music.
How do you define/describe the music you make and play?
G: Well, we define our music as “Dark-Dub”. We have been described as a “Live Dubstep Band” and also “Psychedelic Dub”. It is a mix of roots dub with a very strong electronic side to give more of a strong kick and fat bass.
I consider our music completely live as we do not use any loops/metronomes/headphones, all is analogue, keeping the human error in the music in order not to lose the organic/human feel.
M: Could not agree more!
Could you describe your current studio setup? What are you making music with?
Currently,
Barry (Bass Player) is using Bass Guitar, Novation Bassstation Synth and a Moog Slim Phatty. He also has some sample triggers with effects for voice samples.
Matjö (Keyboards/Synths/Trumpet) is using a Moog Voyager, Nord Electro 3 and a Roland SH 101. He also playing Trumpet through his own effects allowing him to Dub himself. He is also taking a split signal from the Drums (Snare&Hats) which also allows him to Dub the Drums live.
Giotto (Drummer) is using a 5 piece acoustic Drumkit. Also he has 3 electronic drums that are running through midi using Ableton Live. With these electronic drums Giotto can trigger claps/reverse snare/sound effects etc…
We are all using Ableton Live while producing and making our music.
We record all live instruments using Logic Pro.
Where did you record this podcast and what can you tell us about it?
This Podcast was recorded at Planet Earth Studio’s Berlin.
It is a selection of various tracks that Braintheft have recorded over the years. It features some of the very first recordings to the latest recordings from the newest EP “Pressure Drop”.
What are you working on at the moment?
At the Moment we are working on 3 new EP’s. The first EP is already in production which will be a 4 track EP of Dj friendly arranged Heavy Dub/Dubstep. The second EP will be a 4 track EP that will be a “studio 1” style roots dub sound. For this we will go back to the roots of dub and try to capture the sound that gives all “studio 1” recordings this special sound.
The 3rd EP will be a collaboration with L’Oeuf Raide. L’Oeuf Raide is a well known French Drum’n’Bass Producer. This EP will be a complete mash up of Braintheft & L’Oeuf Raide with the end result not being know yet.
Who/what is your biggest inspiration?
G: My biggest inspiration I would say lies with the French Dub scene. Alot of great acts such as Kaly Live Dub and High Tone have had a big influence on me as a live musician. Also, the ever growing Berlin music scene has had a huge impact on how I go about making music and its final sound.
M: I can’t say what’s the biggest inspiration… I keep listening to different stuff all the time. I think it’s very important to get your inspiration from other styles. But I could name drop some stuff like: Hight tone, Miles Davis, Indian classical music, Frank Zappa, Maurice Ravel, Soft Machine, King Tubby, Smashing Pumpkins, Death (the band), John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Magma…
