Matthias Gross, in arte Zaquoir, è un attivo ed interessante artista tedesco, proveniente da Leipzig. Recentemente abbiamo pubblicato una recensione di un bel vinile della SVS Records (Polyrhythmic Series 1) in cui l’opera del nostro musicista era ben rappresentata dal brano “Wokule”.
Zaquoir sta indirizzando la propria passione verso la costruzione di un punto di equilibrio, verrebbe da dire, fra la mente ed il cuore: da un lato le esigenze delle ricerca sul suono e sul ritmo, dall’altro la necessità di un feeling appetibile che non perde di vista la dimensione del club. Le sue composizioni flirtano in continuazione con le sonorità ed i ritmi dubstep, senza però mai scadere nel prevedibile e nel commerciale. Per l’occasione, gli abbiamo chiesto di preparare un podcast in cui presentasse un estratto dei lavori degli ultimi anni: buon ascolto!

Per iniziare puoi dirci in che modo ti sei avvicinato alla produzione musicale ed all’arte del djing?

Ho iniziato utilizzando una semplice scheda audio insieme a Cubase per comporre i miei primi brani. Poi, con il tempo il mio setup è migliorato, ho inserito un synth, un modulo di batteria, un mixer ed un multieffetto, utilizzavo il computer soltanto come sequencer. Nel 1998 suonavo la tromba in una banda di ottoni e prendevo lezioni di pianoforte, provengo totalmente dal lato produttivo.

Come definiresti/descriveresti la musica che ami proporre?

Il mio suono va da experimental soundscapes a techno, da 100 a 180 bpm. Recentemente ho fatto alcune tracce dubstep perché adoro quel tipo di battuta.

Potresti descriverci il tuo setup in studio? Con cosa produci musica attualmente?

Attualmente ho un piccolo studio in casa, utilizzo Logic Pro per le produzioni insieme ad altre attrezzature.

Dove hai registrato il podcast? E cosa puoi dirci in merito?

Ho fatto la prima bozza del podcast a Monaco, dopo la mia gig a Kong, poi la versione finale a Lipsia nel mio studio, appena tornato dal tour di presentazione della compilation Polyrhythmic Series #1 on SVS Records.

Su cosa stai lavorando al momento?

Ho dei nuovi brani con stili diversi per la SVS Records che usciranno all’inizio del 2014 ed anche un Ep in collaborazione con Lukas Rabe, poi sto per iniziare due lavori per musica da film.

Chi o cosa è la tua maggiore ispirazione?

A proposito di musica, Christian Vogel è stato una grande fonte d’ispirazione per me, anche Aphex Twin. Non mi riferisco a al modo in cui suonano ma a come loro procedono per creare nuovi suoni. Ho trovato molto stimolante il free jazz per la sua vicinanza all’elettronica in fatto di improvvisazione, sempre per le tecniche di produzione sono rimasto molto influenzato anche da alcuni artisti drum and bass. In generale, pensando anche alla mia musica, devo dire che in tutti i miei brani c’è una combinazione di diversi momenti della mia vita. Infine devo dire che le collaborazioni sono in genere molto stimolanti.

To start out, can you tell us how you got into djing and producing electronic music?

I started to use a simple general midi sound card and cubase, to make my first tracks. Then my setup developed to a midi setup with a hardware synth, a drum module, a mixer and an effect device and I routed all through a analog mixer and recorded it on a tape deck or on a cd recorder. The computer was for Midi-sequencing only. That was around 1998, when I was also playing trumpet in a brass band and had piano lessons. We made parties and some of my acquaintances were DJs, but I totally come from the production side.

How do you define/describe the music you make and play?

It’s from experimental soundscapes to broken beats and straight techno, from about 100 to 180 bpm. I recently did some dubsteppy tracks, because I like the halftime beats.

Could you describe your current studio setup? What are you making music with?

I’m now having a small studio outside of the flat with room treatment. At home I have also a small setup with studio and hifi monitoring, where I can make sketches. I’m using Logic Pro for production, together with outboard equipment. I use a fast laptop with an extra monitor, so I can take the project with me, that’s really cool.
I use Live for playing live, together with some controllers and a mixer. When it’s about creating soundscapes from scratch then I’ve used my Waldorf Microwave XT together with a keyboard controller, where I was using the sliders and knobs for additional control of the synthesis, so that it’s possible to make a very fast editing of the sounds.

Where did you record this podcast and what can you tell us about it?

The first draft of the mix I made in Munich after the gig in Kong, the final version I made in Leipzig in my studio after I came back of our label record release tour in Augsburg, Munich and London, for the Polyrhythmic Series #1 on SVS Records.

What are you working on at the moment?

New tracks on various styles, my own EP for SVS Records which is about to come out early 2014 and also on a collaboration EP together with Lukas Rabe. Also I’m about to work on two film music projects.

Who/what is your biggest inspiration?

About music Christian Vogel was inspirational to me, the way he deals with sounds, also Aphex Twin. I don’t mean the way how they sound, but how they deal with sounds to create new music. Then music comes not from music, but from life and it is interacting with each other, I mean life and music.
I found free jazz very inspiring, because electronic music is also improvised music most of the time, it’s what you are doing in the studio and then polish it to make it sound fine, for that the tight production techniques some drum and bass producers are using were inspiring to me. I can refer most of my tracks to moments in life, but often it’s a combination of different moments in one track, or a mix of it, you can overlay it like putting layers on an image. Collaborations are also very inspiring.
